31 Sunday Blessings and Prayers to Start Your Week Right
By Teresa Trumbly Lamsam, Ph.D.
I’ve always had high expectations for Sunday. After all, in our house, we celebrate Sunday as the Lord’s Day. We go to church and come home for a relaxing Sunday lunch followed by an afternoon nap. Only, that is rarely how it turns out.
Instead, what ensues on Sunday is usually some form of chaos as we look to the week ahead and scurry about trying to prepare for Monday. That’s when the Sunday Scaries set in – the dread of the work week ahead and the huge To-do list that looms over us.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, we let our guard down during the weekend, and it takes a lot to ramp back up our cognitive energies again. “Some of our Sunday scaries might stem from our brains gearing up to access the parts that we don’t use during the weekend,” according to the clinic.
We hope this list of blessings, verses, and prayers offers an anecdote to the Sunday Scaries. In this enriching collection of Sunday Blessings and Prayers, we’ve gathered inspiring words and images to brighten your soul and to carry with you throughout the week. Whether you’re seeking solace, a spark of joy, or a gesture of love to share with others, you’ll find a hope in the verses and reflections shared here.

Biblical Reflections for a Blessed Sunday
Sundays invite us to immerse ourselves into God’s wisdom, finding reflections that resonate with the essence of this peaceful day. Sunday Blessings and Prayers are a perfect way to start the day, especially when we combine that with scripture reading.
As I read the Bible on this blessed day, I picture myself floating atop the calm waters of a Sunday. It’s a great meditative practice to help you ward off the worries of the coming week.
For he who has entered his rest has rested from his works, just as God did from his. Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by following the same example of disobedience.
Hebrews 4:10-11
On Sunday, we are invited to rest from our work and to focus on spending time with God and our loved ones. We can also use this time to reflect on the week that has passed and to prepare for the week ahead.
Rest for Spiritual Well-Being
On the seventh day God had finished his work of creation, so he rested from all his work. And God blessed the seventh day and declared it holy, because it was the day when he rested from all his work of creation.
Genesis 2:2-3
The fact that God blessed and sanctified the seventh day also teaches us that rest is important for our spiritual well-being. When we rest, we are able to focus on God and on our relationship with him. We are also able to reflect on the blessings that he has given us.
Here are some ways that we can incorporate rest into our lives:
- Take a day off from work or school each week.
- Get enough sleep each night.
- Take breaks during the day to relax and recharge.
- Spend time in nature.
- Engage in activities that you enjoy and that help you to relax.
- Spend time with God in prayer and meditation.
When we rest, we are reflecting the image of God. We are also demonstrating our trust in him. We trust that he will provide for our needs and that he will take care of us.
The Day the Lord Has Made
This is the day the Lord has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it. Psalms 118:24
Psalm 118:24 is a verse that is often quoted on Sundays, and for good reason. It’s a reminder that each day is a gift from God and that we should be grateful for the blessings He has given us.
On many mornings, I will say to myself “This is the day that the Lord has made” as I get out of bed and then either hum or sing a few stanzas of the song, which was originally written by Isaac Watts, an English hymn writer in the 16th/17th centuries.
The psalmist tells us to rejoice and be glad in the day that the Lord has made. This is a call to action. It is not enough to simply be content with our lives. We are called to actively rejoice and be glad.
We can rejoice in the gift of life, in the beauty of creation, and in the love of God. We can also rejoice in the blessings that he has given us, such as our families, our friends, and our health.
Even when we are facing challenges, we can still rejoice and be glad in the Lord. We can rejoice in the knowledge that God is with us and that he will help us through troubles. We can also rejoice in the hope of eternal life.
Here are some ways that we can rejoice and be glad in the day that the Lord has made:
- Spend time with God in prayer and meditation.
- Worship God with your church family.
- Sing songs of praise to God.
- Tell others about the goodness of God.
- Be kind and compassionate to others.
- Forgive those who have wronged you.
- Enjoy the beauty of creation.
- Spend time with loved ones.
- Do things that make you happy.
When we rejoice and be glad in the day that the Lord has made, we are reflecting his image and we are bringing glory to his name.
Finding Rest in Jesus
Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.
Matthew 11:28
Matthew 11:28 is a beautiful verse that reminds us that Jesus is the source of true rest. When we are weary and burdened, we can come to him and he will give us rest.
In today’s fast-paced world, it is easy to feel overwhelmed and stressed. We are constantly bombarded with messages that tell us that we need to do more and be more. But Jesus calls us to come to him and to find rest in him.
When we come to Jesus, he gives us his peace. He helps us to let go of our worries and anxieties. He also helps us to see the world from his perspective. When we see the world through Jesus’ eyes, we are able to find rest and peace, even in the midst of difficult circumstances.
Here are some ways that we can find rest in Jesus:
- Spend time with Jesus in prayer and meditation.
- Read the Bible and reflect on the truths of God’s word.
- Worship God with your church family.
- Serve others in the name of Jesus.
- Take breaks throughout the day to relax and recharge.
- Spend time in nature.
- Be mindful of your thoughts and feelings, and cast your cares on Jesus.
When we find rest in Jesus, we are able to live our lives to the fullest. We are also able to be a witness to others of the love and peace that Jesus offers.
