Fall is my favorite time of year, so it was such a joy for me to read through all of these fall Bible verses and share them with you. My family and I live in South Carolina, and after we’ve experienced a long, hot summer, there’s nothing more refreshing than that first hint of crispness in the air.

Our home backs up to acres and acres of uncleared forest, so watching the leaves change is nothing short of inspiring. That’s the feeling that these Bible verses about autumn evoke – the sense that God is a loving artist who sets the seasons in motion and provides for our every need. 

Let’s take a look at these 10 fall Bible verses and see how they can inspire gratitude this season.

What can we be grateful for this season?

Autumn is such a beautiful reminder to cultivate gratitude. It’s so filled with themes that just inspire thankful thinking. These 10 fall Bible verses draw on those themes, and as you read and meditate on them, I’m sure you will find more than just these 10 reasons to be grateful this season.

Our God Never Changes

Fall is a season of transition in many ways. The hot summer gives way to the cool autumn. The children transition from freely playing to learning at school. The sweltering growing season culminates in a bountiful harvest. All of these changes are a part of the beautiful cycle that God created, yet he remains the same. These fall bible verses show that we can count on him.

The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever.

Isaiah 40:8

The good we sow will result in a harvest

As a mom, it is so difficult to do the hard but necessary things when it doesn’t seem to make a difference immediately. Consistently disciplining my children, family devotionals, and healthy eating as a family aren’t things that give me immediate results, so when things get hard, they tend to go by the wayside.

But, God makes us this promise in these fall Bible verses – that if we just keep sowing to please the spirit, we will reap a harvest.

Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.

Galatians 6:7-10

God has the best intentions for us

God is such a good father. He created us, so he knows what we need. In these fall Bible verses, we see those good intentions shine through. God doesn’t want us to feel the weight and pain of this world, so he calls us to find true joy in him and rejoice.

Instead of feeling anxious, he calls us to lay our burdens on him and pray continually. Instead of constantly chasing things that will not make us happy, he calls us to give thanks. And this is the perfect season to give thanks!

Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

1 Thessalonians 6:16-18

God is filled with compassion for us

Some of us envision God as a detached clockmaker in the sky, who doesn’t really involve himself or his emotions in what goes on below. These fall Bible verses tell us the opposite. We can see so much about the character of our loving Father here. He loves us and has compassion for us when he sees us hurting.

Then, he stirs us to pray and act on each other’s account. I can point to so many times when I’ve felt low or was struggling, when a friend called or stopped by at just the right time to brighten my day. Not only that, but God desires for every single person to experience his saving grace, so he wants us to go out into his harvest field to win souls for him.

Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness.When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.

Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.

Matthew 9:35-38

Jesus promises that he will return

In the First Century after Jesus ascended into heaven, his disciples on earth waited with such eagerness for his promised return. Now, 2,000 years later, many of us don’t live as though Jesus’s return is real.

However, we should all take a lesson from nature, from the changing seasons, from the turning leaves, that the time in which we are living will not last forever. These fall Bible verses remind us that Jesus will come back, and soon.

Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains. You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near.

James 5:7-8

Our difficult circumstances are temporary

An exercise I like to do when I’m feeling especially sad or stressed is to sit, clear my mind, and think about my actual circumstances, right now, this very second.

I think about the soft chair I’m sitting on, the sound my children playing in the background or the rooster crowing outside, and the warmth of the sun shining through my window. The circumstances that caused me to feel sad or overwhelmed are generally not occurring in that very moment.

They happened in the past, or I’m worried about future circumstances. These fall Bible verses reiterate that fact. When we sow tears (in the past), those circumstances will not last. A new season will come in which we will experience joy.

Those who sow with tears will reap with songs of joy. Those who go out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with them.

Psalm 126:5-6

God’s presence refreshes us

I don’t know about where you live, but here in South Carolina, fall is not a particularly rainy time of year, so when I was reading through these fall Bible verses, I was having a hard time understanding all the references to rain I found.

As it turns out, autumn in Israel isn’t rainy either. In fact, Israel is a very dry place, so rain is a welcomed, refreshing visitor. God does not desire for us to just slog through life, exhausted and parched.

Instead, these fall Bible verses show us that God sends his refreshing rain into our lives that allows us to go from strength to strength.

Blessed are those whose strength is in you, whose hearts are set on pilgrimage. As they pass through the Valley of Baka, they make it a place of springs; the autumn rains also cover it with pools.They go from strength to strength, till each appears before God in Zion.

Psalm 84:5-7

Our God is faithful

Here’s another reference to the rain! But, in these fall Bible verses, we see that the rain indicates God’s immense faithfulness. If God is in control of the weather and can provide what we need, he is certainly in control of your circumstances.

Even if you are overwhelmed, in physical or emotional pain, or are experiencing hardships that you feel are insurmountable, just remember that this is a period of drought. It will not last. The God who loves you, who provides for you, is getting ready to send the rain. Our job is simply to wait patiently.

Be glad, people of Zion, rejoice in the Lord your God, for he has given you the autumn rains because he is faithful. He sends you abundant showers, both autumn and spring rains, as before. The threshing floors will be filled with grain; the vats will overflow with new wine and oil.

Joel 2:23-24

God’s will is for us to have peace

God gives us an amazing plan for peace in our lives. His will is not for us to be anxious or sad, but to have the true peace that comes from being reconciled to him.

Then, as that peace between us and God rules, we are able to make peace with the people and circumstances around us. It’s an inward peace that shines on the outside. Isn’t that an amazing thought!

Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.

And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Colossians 3:15-17

Our God is an amazing shepherd

Our God is an amazing shepherd who created everything and reigns from his mercy seat. You and I didn’t create ourselves, and we would have nothing without the grace and benevolence of God. We are all created by God, and we belong to him.

These fall Bible verses tell us that as believers, we have even more reason to praise our glorious God. He has not only made us, but he has made a way, through Jesus, for us to be new creations, set free from our sin and reconciled to our righteous Father.

Remember when Jesus said the Good Shepherd left the 99 to find the one who had wandered off? At one time, you were that one.

Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs. Know that the Lord is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.

Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.
