Bible verses for new parents to memorize

Having a few verses committed to memory has made such a difference many times throughout my life, and not just for those times of stress! It’s wonderful to be able to express joy in happy times as well.

Jesus knew the scripture. He often quoted the Old Testament. By some scholarly estimates, Jesus quoted or alluded to scripture in 1/10 of his words that are in the New Testament.

Among other reasons to memorize God’s word:

  • Bible verses help us walk in obedience with God’s will and avoid temptation.
  • I read scripture every morning for the renewal of my mind. (Romans 12:2)
  • God’s word brings blessings into our lives.
  • In Psalms, we learn that scriptures put us in awe of God, reminding us to praise and pray.
  • We will be better witnesses to others.
  • Bible verses can enrich our prayer lives.

To get you started, here are a few verses that Christians commonly memorize:

The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise him.
Psalm 28:7

Trust in Jehovah with all thy heart,
And lean not upon thine own understanding:
In all thy ways acknowledge him,
And he will direct thy paths.
Proverbs 3:5-6 (ASV)

Do not worry about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:6-7 (EHV)

‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This is the first commandment. The second is like this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”
Mark 12:30-31

I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.
3 John 1:4 (KJV)

Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are honorable, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report: if there is any virtue and if there is any praise, think about these things.
Philippians 4:8

Bible verses about being wonderfully made

“Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you.
Before you were born, I sanctified you.
I have appointed you a prophet to the nations.”
Jeremiah 1:5

For you formed my inmost being.
You knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I will give thanks to you,
for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
Your works are wonderful.
My soul knows that very well.
My frame wasn’t hidden from you,
when I was made in secret,
woven together in the depths of the earth.
Your eyes saw my body.
In your book they were all written,
the days that were ordained for me,
when as yet there were none of them.
Psalm 139:13-16

You have clothed me with skin and flesh,
and knit me together with bones and sinews.
Job 10:11

God created man in his own image. In God’s image he created him.
Genesis 1:27

What does the Bible say about a parent’s love?

A parent’s love is sacrificial

In the Old Testament, Hannah poured out her soul to the Lord in anguished prayers. She was overcome with grief because she could not have a child.

She made a vow to the Lord: “Lord Almighty, if you will only look on your servant’s misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the Lord for all the days of his life.” (1 Samuel 1:11)

Once her son Samuel was born, she determined that she would wean him and then take him to the House of the Lord to dedicate his life to God. Hannah did not forget her promise to God.

“I prayed for this boy, and the Lord has given me what I asked of Him. So I have given him to the Lord. He is given to the Lord as long as he lives.” And they worshiped the Lord there.
1 Samuel 1:27–28 (NLV)

A parent’s love is God-centered

Train up a child in the way he should go,
and when he is old he will not depart from it.
Proverbs 22:6

Throughout American history, parents and Christian leaders have loved quoting Proverbs 22:6. I heard it so often growing up that I may have tired of it, but as I raised my son to love the Lord with all his heart (Matthew 22:37), the proverb and the commentary below by Henry Ward Beecher made sense.

“It is not hard to make a child or a tree grow right if you train them when they’re young, but to make them straighten out after you’ve allowed things to go wrong is not an easy matter.”
Beecher, H. W. (1904, pp. 11-12). A Treasury of Illustration. United Kingdom: Revell.

Children need us to lead by example. From morning to bedtime, our children should see our love of God in all aspects of our lives.

Blessed is everyone who fears Yahweh,
    who walks in his ways.
For you will eat the labor of your hands.
You will be happy, and it will be well with you.
Your wife will be as a fruitful vine in the innermost parts of your house,
your children like olive shoots around your table.
Psalm 128:1-3

Her children rise up and call her blessed.
    Her husband also praises her:
“Many women do noble things,
    but you excel them all.”
Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain;
but a woman who fears Yahweh, she shall be praised.
Proverbs 31:28-30

And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.
Deuteronomy 6:5 (KJV)

Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment.
Matthew 22:37–38

We love him, because he first loved us.
1 John 4:19

Know therefore that Yahweh your God himself is God, the faithful God, who keeps covenant and loving kindness to a thousand generations with those who love him and keep his commandments.
Deuteronomy 7:9

A parent’s love is humbling

About that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who is greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven?”

Jesus called a little child to him and put the child among them. Then he said, “I tell you the truth, unless you turn from your sins and become like little children, you will never get into the Kingdom of Heaven. So anyone who becomes as humble as this little child is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven.

“And anyone who welcomes a little child like this on my behalf is welcoming me. But if you cause one of these little ones who trusts in me to fall into sin, it would be better for you to have a large millstone tied around your neck and be drowned in the depths of the sea.
Matthew 18:1-6 (NLT)

But Jesus said, “Allow the little children, and don’t forbid them to come to me; for the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to ones like these.”
Matthew 19:14

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared before that we would walk in them.
Ephesians 2:10

The child was growing, and was becoming strong in spirit, being filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon him.
Luke 2:40
