Strong confidence on our own isn’t easy. Yet with God, all things are possible! These Bible verses about confidence can help with finding God’s confidence and how it is more powerful than any type of confidence we could have on our own.

What does the Bible say about being confident? 

According to the Oxford dictionary, the definition of the word confidence is: “the feeling or belief that one can rely on someone or something; firm trust.” Is that what God’s word says about confidence though?

Maybe you stumbled on this article because you want to walk confidently as a child of God. Or maybe you long for the power of God to show up in your life, but you’re not confident that it can happen.

How do Christians gain Confidence? 

God’s kingdom is upside down. It goes farther beyond “the last shall be first, and the first last” (Matthew 20:16). Bible verses about confidence are no different. In order to gain confidence, fear needs to be added. 

Upside down, right? 

Except we are not talking about being afraid. We are talking about fear of the Lord. To be in fear of the Lord is to be in awe and reverence of who He is and what He does. When we fear God, we are submitting to who He is, and His confidence. It takes away the pressure from having to rely on our own understanding.

The more we realize that God is in complete control, and we abide our confidence in Him, life changes. We no longer need our own confidence of worldly things, and can instead relax in His Word for us.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30

Ever since trying to give in to God and rely on being confident in Him instead of me, I still struggle with low self-esteem from time to time, but I know I am human, and there is great reward from continually trying to hand things over to God.

Bible verses about confidence

  1. So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised. Hebrews 10:35-36

This Bible verse is in the midst of a chapter that discussed the Old Covenant with God versus the New Covenant that Jesus brought with Him. The people to whom this was written were in danger of resorting back to their old ways due to their lack in confidence. 

The author of Hebrews is reminding his audience that in the earlier days, after they had “received the light,” they “endured in a great conflict full of suffering.” (Hebrews 10:32) but will still filled with the confidence in Jesus. This verse is bringing them back to that point, reminding them the need of endurance and how they will be rewarded when they keep their confidence in God.

  1. For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. Psalm 139:13-14

Sometimes our fear of failure comes from us believing in faults that we have. Yet God can take anything and turn it to good (Genesis 50:20.) What we as society deem as “flaws” are how God created us to be, uniquely made, so that we can not rely in our own confidence but rather the true confidence of God.

  1. With him is only the arm of flesh, but with us is the Lord our God to help us and to fight our battles.” And the people gained confidence from what Hezekiah the king of Judah said. 2 Chronicles 32:8

Instead of taking matters in his own hands, Hezekiah trusted God, and encouraged people to trust God’s almighty power as well.

  1. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 2 Corinthians 12:9

If you’re self esteem is low, remember that God doesn’t want you there. To make power perfect in weakness doesn’t mean we have to have low self-esteem, it simply means that we realize there is no place of refuge in our own confidence, or in the “wisdom” of men, but rather what the word of the Lord says.

  1. For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline. 2 Timothy 1:7

Confidence comes from these things: God’s power, God’s love, and self-discipline through prayer and time with God. This will help us move from our own image of what life is supposed to look like to His.

  1. In him and through faith in him we may approach God with freedom and confidence. Ephesians 3:12

I want God to be the stronghold of my life. But doing that takes great faith. In this verse, God is giving us permission to come to Him with what we request with both freedom and confidence. When we do this, if we can persevere through this, we can see the power of Christ at work in our lives!

  1. Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. Hebrews 4:16

This is another verse telling us that we can receive answers to a godly life when we lay down our own abilities and go to God with good courage of things to come.

  1. So we say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?” Hebrews 13:6

Our Lord God knows the ins and outs of everything on this Earth. He then sent down the son of God to be able to physically and emotionally walk through everything that occurs on the Earth. He sent His own son to live and die. And now that same God wants to give us assurance of things and bring the kingdom of God here. Knowing just how everpresent He is in all of this can give us a meaningful life of confidently honoring Him.

  1. The fruit of that righteousness will be peace; its effect will be quietness and confidence forever. Isaiah 32:17

I love that quietness and confidence go together in this verse. In society, being loud and confident can seem like good things, but following God often calls for a gentle confidence. Because the kingdom of Heaven is upside down, sometimes the calmest confidence can feel like the loudest. When we take the first step to saying yes to stepping out in faith, all we can pray for is a calm peace that rules over us.

  1. but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Isaiah 40:31

I love the imagery of this verse, because soaring around like an eagle would definitely take us out of our comfort zone! When the rest of the world may grow weary, we can rest knowing that his steadfast love will carry us through.

  1. So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10

I remember talking in a Bible study once about what we thought the best Bible verses were. This one kept coming up, and I can see why now; it shows the love of God amazingly well. God will do all the things that require strength, all we have to do is place our confidence in Him.

  1. “But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. Jeremiah 17:7

When I think of this Bible verse, it always takes me to Mathew 6:34, “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” We become blessed when we put tomorrow aside, and place our confidence in today. In today there is God.

  1. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9

The Holy Bible contains all the answers we need in life. This same book that gives us all that we need also says that God will go to the end of the earth with us. How comforting is that?

  1. When all our enemies heard about this, all the surrounding nations were afraid and lost their self-confidence, because they realized that this work had been done with the help of our God. Nehemiah 6:16

The wisdom of men can only go so far. God changes everything!

  1. This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. 1 John 5:14

In this present age, it is hard to be a follower of Christ. We live in a world where we are told that we can’t go to God for anything, or that He won’t answer our prayers. The praying world would change if we believed 1 John 5:14 that we can go to Him with anything and He WILL hear us!

  1. Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. Philippians 1:6

Did you hear that? There is good work in you! If you are alive, God is not finished yet. That alone should give us enough confidence!

  1. This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world we are like Jesus. 1 John 4:17

This world will bring us so much trouble. Our goal is to become like Jesus as much as possible. When we do this, our confidence in the world will diminish, but our confidence in Christ will grow.

  1. For the Lord will be at your side and will keep your foot from being snared. Proverbs 3:26

God will not stop us from being in tough situations, but He will save us in them.

  1. For the Lord detests the perverse but takes the upright into his confidence. Proverbs 3:32

God loves all of us. When we try to walk upright in the Lord, we can be within His confidence.

  1. Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God. Psalm 20:7

Many of the Psalms used war imagery, and so this verse was extremely powerful in Biblical times. In a time where the amount of chariots and horses symbolized strength and power and confidence in an army, this Psalm is saying simply the name of the Lord is enough to be confident in.

  1. Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear, though war break out against me, even then I will be confident. Psalm 27:3

Similar to the verse above, the Psalmist is stating that even if a war goes around him he will still be confident. There are many examples in the Old Testament of armies not having enough people and God using that to show up.

Bible verses about strength in God’s confidence

When we place our confidence in God, it is not simply that we gain more confidence. We also increase our strength, because we are using His strength instead of ours!

  1. I can do all this through him who gives me strength. Philippians 4:13
  2. I came to you in weakness with great fear and trembling. My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power. 1 Corinthians 2:3-5

Bible verses about God confidently protecting us

When we place our trust in God, He will confidently protect us. It doesn’t mean we will never face trouble, but God will be keeping us safe in the midst of the trouble. 

  1. Have no fear of sudden disaster or of the ruin that overtakes the wicked, for the Lord will be at your side and will keep your foot from being snared. Proverbs 3:25-26
  2. Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. Hebrews 11:1

Bible verses about confidence and hope

Romans 5:3-4 says, “And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.” 

To persevere is to have confidence enough in God to put it into action. And look what perseverance leads to! Hope will never disappoint us.

  1. Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him. Psalm 62:5
  2. For you have been my hope, Sovereign Lord, my confidence since my youth. Psalm 71:5
  3. May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13

Bible verses about confidence and trust

As we learn more Bible verses about confidence, and our confidence grows in Him, so does our trust. When we trust more, we gain even more confidence. It goes hand in hand, and the two increase together. 

  1. Whoever fears the Lord has a secure fortress, and for their children it will be a refuge. Proverbs 14:26 
  2. Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God. 1 John 3:21
  3. When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. Psalm 56:3

Bible verses about confidence in God instead of people

One of the most important parts about growing in confidence is decreasing the trust of people to increase the trust in God. This doesn’t mean stop trusting people entirely. It means choosing to whom you will go for wise counsel. If the wise counsel matches Biblical truth, it is good counsel to trust. But our trust should always be in God first.

  1. For it is we who are the circumcision, we who serve God by his Spirit, who boast in Christ Jesus, and who put no confidence in the flesh—though I myself have reasons for such confidence. If someone else thinks they have reasons to put confidence in the flesh, I have more. Philippians 3:3-4
  2. Are we beginning to commend ourselves again? Or do we need, like some people, letters of recommendation to you or from you? You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, known and read by everyone. How do I ask God for confidence? 

The best way to ask God for confidence is from the heart. That sounds cliche, I know, but God already knows what you are thinking, so why not just say exactly how it is in your head? God will meet you where you’re at. 

If you feel that you need to better formulate your words, praying God’s truth is a great place to start. Pick any of the verses in the list above and turn it into a prayer!

A Prayer for Confidence

O Lord, I know what the word of God says, but sometimes I succumb to focusing on my own trouble instead of confidently following the peace of God. My work on gaining confidence provides spiritual growth, so I know that the work of your hands are mightily working through my own heart as well as those around me. Help me turn to you more each day, and grow in your comfort and confidence and strength. Amen.

There are much more than 50 Bible verses about confidence, but we chose these 50 as a great starting place. This is because there are steps to placing our trust in God. It may not happen overnight, and that is okay- we are human. But each day that you take another step in trusting God, you will notice your confidence growing- because it is not your confidence, it is His.
